I have had the pleasure of working under Kayl only twice. In just those two occasions I witnessed her enthusiasm for teaching, dog training, coaching people, and agility–it was truly contagious! Kayl keeps things light and fun for both the handler and the dog. A couple of years ago, I struggled through motivation issues with my dog that I have since resolved. Kayl immediately saw when my dog needed a little more support as I was working out my handling through some challenging sequences. She knew exactly what to do to keep my dog’s enthusiasm for the game in the moment. I only wish I lived closer to work with her more regularly!
Emma and I have been attending classes at McCann Professional Dog Trainers since I brought her home as a pup, and that was over three years ago now. We began with the Head Start program and proceeded through Grades 1 to 4 of the family dog program. The highly experienced, knowledgeable and friendly instructors have taught me to be a much better dog trainer than I was before. With approximately 1 instructor for every 4 students we were able to get the help and attention we needed to be successful in our training. All steps in each of the programs are clearly explained by the instructors and the training manuals provide an excellent resource and contain a wealth of general information about family dog ownership.
Emma and I are now in Kayl’s agility classes which we have now been in for over two years. Kayl brings years of experience to her students. As the sport of agility evolves, she brings to her students the new techniques she learns. Her enthusiasm and great desire for her students to be successful in the sport of agility is what makes her classes so enjoyable. Her fun challenging classes encourage students to continually increase both confidence and skill levels. Kayl quickly gets to know how each unique dog and handler team work so that she is able to recommend the best handling techniques them. Kayl is supported by a number of enthusiastic, skilled and friendly assistant instructors who offer excellent assistance and feedback as we work though our exercises.
Since training at McCann Professional Dog Trainers, Emma I have learned so much and we keep coming back. What more can I say?
I have been training with McCann’s for over a decade and consecutively for the past five years in competitive agility. I can say without a doubt that McCann Professional Dog Trainers has a high tech arena in which to train and provide cutting edge agility classes. Without them my dogs would not be able to compete at a National Event and on the cusp of an International level.
I have had the opportunity to work with Kayl a few times and I am looking forward to working with her again. Not only does she have an amazing teaching ability but she has a great sense of humour! She has the ability to bring out the best in all the teams regardless of breed or level of experience! I have learned so much and enjoyed every moment!

Kayl’s talent for dog training is her own, and growing up in a large and thriving dog training business no doubt helped this talent grow! I met Kayl 20 years ago, when I brought our first family dog to McCann’s. I have been going strong in dog sports ever since! Today, I am pleased to be a dog agility student of Kayl. Kayl has turned her experience into the great skill of being able to help others. I value Kayl’s expert eye and clear instruction. I highly recommend her, and know you will be impressed by what you learn!
Jake (my dog) and I both loved our first agility class. Kayl is very enthusiastic and makes the classes fun. She is also very knowledgeable, positive and patient, and breaks down the skills well, which is good because there is a lot to learn for owner and dog. We will be back in the fall.
Kayl’s classes are fun and energetic!!! She breaks down even the more complicated moves so that they are understandable to everyone including novices. You really feel the successful as you progress and the dogs have a blast as the techniques are so naturel for them!!!
Over the years I’ve had the opportunity to observe education in a wide variety of settings. Kayl McCann stands out as an exceptional teacher. Kayl’s success in competitive agility clearly shows that she knows how to train dogs. But it is the success and enthusiasm of Kayl’s agility students that shows she knows how to teach agility to people. Kayl helps students lay the foundation for success by first leading them to develop key basic skills, always providing rationale. As training progresses, Kayl provides varied exercises that are challenging without being overwhelming. When students experience difficulties, Kayl demonstrates a remarkable ability to identify root causes. In such cases Kayl is able to help her students understand what needs to change and why, and provide specific, understandable suggestions that consistently lead to success. She helps students learn to observe and assess their own performance, which is a real gift because it is this type of awareness that allows students to meet their full potential. Recognizing that it is much easier for students to reach their goals if they are having fun, Kayl brings wonderful, positive energy to every class. No matter what kind of day I’ve had, I always feel great after an agility class with Kayl! (And so does my dog.)
I would best describe the (agility) classes as serious fun – instruction, expectations and feedback in a positive manner with an overall sense of game. I find the environment supportive. Kayl’s ability to track the progress of each dog and handler, keeping in mind the strengths and weakness of each pair, provides the feeling of a personal training session within a class setting. The focus is not about the best dog and handler, but rather getting the best from each dog and handler. Kayl invites discussion on various alternatives to the different aspects of agility and provides sound reasoning for her particular approaches while keeping an open mind to other possibilities.
The classes are constantly evolving – it’s never stale.
“Attending a seminar by Kayl McCann totally changed the direction of my agility career. She is a very talented instructor, and is able to see exactly what each and every team needs in order to succeed! I left her seminar feeling like I had begun to learn a new language that enabled me to communicate with my dog in a way that I never thought possible. I now take weekly classes – and always feel challenged, empowered and inspired to improve!!
